How Do YOU Dougie?

We've been seeing a lot of versions of the Dougie around the studio lately, and lots of our students visiting from across the country have different ways to do the dance.

We love seeing all the personal styles that come through, and now we want to see how YOU Dougie.

From March 1-15, post a video of you and your friends doing your version of the Dougie on our Broadway Dance Center facebook page, and we'll check them out. Tell your friends to "like" their favorites, and on the 16th, we'll pick some of our top picks and give out BDC classes and swag to the winners! We've never seen a tap Dougie or a ballet Dougie-do they exist???

According to the freedictionary.com passion is – “A powerful emotion, such as love, joy, hatred, or anger.” Not every person has the opportunity in life to find their passion, let alone follow it. For those of us that get to follow our passion of dance why do we always let negative thoughts hinder our ability to really enjoy what we love?

For my husband one of his passions is football. He loves to watch it from August to February. It doesn’t matter the team or the level he just loves the sport. He never sits on the couch while watching or contemplates the other things could be doing. He is fully involved in his passion enjoying every minute he gets of it. Sometimes he has to miss a game because of other commitments, but that just makes the games he gets to watch more special.

For my friend one of her passions is chocolate. She loves it so much that for her birthday every gift she gets usually has some form of chocolate in it. From Reese’s cups to Godiva to just a plain old Hershey bar, every time she eats a piece of chocolate she enjoys it. It always brings her a sense of happiness.

For me the actual physicality of dancing is my passion. It doesn’t matter if I’m on a stage, in class, or in my living room. The movement of dance makes me happy. So this brings me back to my original thought of why do those negative thought s creep in like a thief in the night while I’m doing my tendues.
Why can’t I enjoy dance like a delicious piece of chocolate or an action packed football game.

Well I’m not sure the why will ever be answered, but a simple solution on how to move on from the negative thoughts was answered this week by Tracie Stanfield. Just say “NEXT” it is that simple. It is kind of like the MTV dating show “NeXt”, but with your thoughts instead of people. Anytime you are having a negative thought about yourself in dance class you just say “NEXT” to that voice until it comes up with another thought. So when I’m standing there watching the combination and I hear that voice say “ if only your legs were a little longer I say NEXT, and when that voice says something negative I say NEX. Eventually the voice will either be quiet or maybe start to say some positive things. Tracie had given this advice to another student and when I heard it, I thought it was a perfect solution.

So whatever your passion is, be sure to enjoy it without letting negative thoughts get in the way. If they do start to creep in swat them away with a “NEXT” or perhaps a football game or piece of chocolate.

Getting Out Of My Comfort Zone

When you are lucky enough to do the same thing day after day sometimes you forget how lucky you are. The everyday routine becomes monotonous and the things you love get taken for granted. In today’s world I forget how lucky I am to have a job, let alone something I love to do. Whether it’s at rehearsal, taking class or teaching I get to live my dream. Not everyone is that lucky; so it’s a shame I have been taking it for granted lately. I didn’t even realize I wasn’t working to my full potential. I was so comfortable that it was easy to slip into my own mediocrity without realizing it.

I decided to change that and really started to work rather than go through the motions. I found I enjoyed working. Somewhere I forgot what it was like to sweat within the first 10 minutes of class. I started pushing myself to stretch a little further, fight a little harder to stay on releve, and just really work as hard as I could. It was the greatest thing. I felt energized after warm up and I was ready to challenge myself even further with the combination. I pushed myself for that extra turn that I knew I could do. Sometimes it’s easier to say I can’t then fight for the “I can”. I tried to dance the combination while it was being taught instead of waiting for the last ten minutes of class when I am in the rhythm and know what I am doing. I could feel myself getting nervous, it was a little scary to push myself out of my comfort zone.

After class I felt great. I had really accomplished something… I had figured out a way to push myself in class instead of waiting for the teacher to push me. Getting out of my comfort zone was exhilarating and I had only taken a baby step out. I hope to continue to push myself so I can continue to grow as an artist. I won’t be taking these opportunites of dance for granted I’m going to live in each and every one of them.

International Inspirations

My favorite class this week was Tracie Stanfield’s Adv beg class on Friday. It wasn’t the warm-up which not only stretches you in every way possible, but pushes you to work harder every time you do it. It wasn’t because we did “jazz” across the floor with some front and back forced arch soutenu turns. It wasn’t getting to perform the beautiful combination to Weightlessness with its grounded movement that pushes you thru space challenging you to find a way to connect the strong movement while still keeping a soft and subtle quality in your energy. I found my inspiration this week in the last ten minutes of Friday’s class.

It was during these last ten minutes that Tracie pulled out three international students to perform the combination for the class. These 3 girls are regulars to Tracie’s class, but I’ve never really sat and watched them dance. Each offered some different choices within the combination. The girl in the center cut thru space with such ease, her lines were so strong that she created pictures with every movement. The girl on stage left felt the drama of the song. Her emotional intention was so strong it reached out thru her finger tips. The girl on stage right had lightness to her movement making softer more subtle choices that lead her movement to have a seamless quality. It was so great to be able to sit and watch their talent. I was inspired by the choices they made in the combination to make it their own.

I am always amazed at the international students that come to Broadway Dance Center. Just the thought of going to another country and taking a dance class is scary; forget about staying there for some time and really immersing yourself in the dance culture. These dancers come to class not completely understanding the language, the music, or the culture of NYC dance, but knowing their love of dance trumps their fear. The bravery they show by being in class inspires me to work harder and be braver in my own choices.

New Year’s Resolutions…

I am not a big fan of the New Year’s Resolution. This is probably because usually by the third week of January mine like everyone else’s is out the window and I have already gone back to old habitats. Last year I joined a gym and vowed to go every day, well that worked for about a week. Then the second week I went 4 out of 7 days. Needless to say by Feb 1, my resolution was out the window. So this year I am going to try something new, a few resolutions that if I don’t stick to only hurt me and not my piggy bank.

This year I resolve to take more ballet class. It was taking ballet as a child that solidified my love for dance. I was able to perform in the Nutcracker which made me love the element of make believe not only in general, but also through ballet. It didn’t matter if I was a lowly mouse or a beautiful snowflake; I loved to be a part of this production. During ballet class I can finally pretend to be the sugar plum fairy that I always dreamed of being.

I resolve to let more people know how much I admire their dancing. Sometimes in class I will see someone do the combination in a way that completely inspires me. After class I would want to tell them what an amazing job they did but something would stop me from telling them. I think part of it’s from being shy or me worrying that it may be embarrassing for me or both of us. I don’t want people to think I’m some weirdo or think I’m just spreading sunshine around the room for the fun of it. When someone has come up to me to compliment me it had always been a highlight of my day and given me that extra little bit of confidence. Being on either end of this compliment can turn a bad day into a better one.

Finally I resolve to try and enjoy the journey and not just the destination. I want to enjoy all parts of class not just the last ten minutes when we are doing the combination. In rehearsal with Synthesis Dance Project I want to enjoy the creation of a new piece, not just performing it onstage. Just like there are beginnings and endings to every facet of dance, there are the same beginnings and endings to a new year. With the New Year upon us challenge yourself with a resolution that is realistic, attainable, and brings happiness to all around you.

The small things…

Last week in class Tracie gave us one of her challenging turning combinations across the floor. It might sound simple… 3 pique turns followed by an outside drag turn, into a side attitude turn which leads you to gently fall to a roll on the floor to get up and start all over again. You could hear people start to groan after the 3 pique turns because that’s where the challenge started… remembering to really use your plie to get into the drag turn otherwise you would never have enough momentum to make it into the side attitude turn and finish the combination.

After we had all tried the combination once on the right Tracie stopped the music to redirect our energy. She started saying that instead of focusing on what we can’t do well that we should rather celebrate and enjoy what we can do. She went on to say how dance is all about taking steps forward and every time we make it to class it’s a step in the right direction.

As class continued I thought why did I just spend the first 8 counts worrying about if I would get all the way around in that attitude turn. I was missing out on enjoying the rest of the combination. As I began the infamous and dreaded left side I said “screw it,” I wasn’t going to let 2 counts hold me hostage. I was going to enjoy what I could do well and know that there was the possibility that the turn might not be so bad after all. I can’t say the result was better/worse based upon my enjoyment. Sometimes I made it all the way around and sometimes I fell a little short , nonetheless I enjoyed the combination a lot more because I let myself go with it.

In class and rehearsal I often find myself focusing on my own short comings. I want my legs to be higher, I want more flexible hips, I want a back that bends in half, you get the point. I never take a second to celebrate where I am or how far I’ve come. This class taught me that dance is a lot more fun when you forget about all the cant’s and focus on the cans. I can’t promise I’ll be able to do that all the time but I can sure try. I recommend you do the same and let yourself go every now and then. Who knows you might even enjoy it !

Generosity of Spirit

The Radio City Rockettes, the Rockefeller Christmas Tree, ice skating in Bryant Park, Santa Claus at Macy’s and the hustle and bustle of New York City during the holiday season. I love this time of year! I don’t mind dodging tourists all bundled up or the occasional spray of sludge from a cab; it’s all part of the winter season in the Big Apple. This is the season where it is better to give than to receive and to extend ourselves and kindness to others.

This week during our company rehearsal Tracie asked me to be more generous with my movement. At first I wasn’t sure what she meant or how I could do this. How do I give my movement to others? During class on Thursday I really wanted to find a way to be more generous, so I took a step back and I watched and observed others. I looked for people who pulled me in to their dancing and the qualities they had that perhaps I was missing.

There was this one girl who was in the third group and with one movement she pulled me in with one reach of her arm. She was shorter in stature, but her energy extended beyond her limbs. Her movement was so generous that it was able to pull me in and above all it really inspired me. She was not only true to the choreography but true to herself and the choices she made within the combination. She was generous from head to toe giving all she could and not even realizing how important her dancing had become to the rest of us. This inspiration is what I was looking for and what I needed to capture in movement myself. I need to send my movement and energy out past my limbs and not hold on so tight. This will let me be more generous with my movement. After watching I was so inspired and excited to share what I had learned.

Just to walk into class and see lots of smiling faces on these cold winter days is inspiring, but on this specific day this girl gave me an early Christmas present that didn’t even need to be wrapped. J

During this season of giving, we cannot forget about how much we have to give. We have so many talents and gifts to share that don’t need to be purchased. In class our energy and movement choices are enough to inspire others. Who knows who may be watching you for inspiration, for all you know during this time of year it could be Santa Claus.

The Importance of an Hour and a Half

It’s all about me and it’s all about being able to get in that Dance class, I get an hour and half to just focus on me and what I love todo … Dance. In my life I am constantly running from job to job; first and most importantly I am a dancer. I am a company member in Synthesis Dance Project, I teach at a studio in Maplewood NJ one night aweek, I own a studio in Princeton, NJ where I spend four to five nights a week, and I own a dance competition that tours 13 weekends out of the year. It feels like I never have a moment to catch my breath. In class I can not only catch my breath, but I can find it and use it to inspire movement.

My home away from home is Broadway Dance Center. I have been a student at Broadway Dance Center for the past ten years. I used to run up and down the stairs from class to class at the old studios. Now I love the sleek, clean and modern feel to the new studios. When you walk into the lobby of the studio on the 3^rd floor I am greeted by some of the happiest people on earth. I have watched as the staff helps customer after customer navigate the class sch

edule and their levels. They always bring a smile to my face no matter what kind of a day I’m having.

You can usually find me in one of Tracie Stanfield’s classes or a ballet class. Class is where I can fine tune my technique, build strength and endurance, and just focus on myself. My favorite part of class are the people in it. I love to look around and be inspired by the talent and the work ethic in the class.

This past week my inspiration was a guy who took Tracie Stanfield’s Adv Beg Jazz Class. He seemed like your average guy dressed in cargo shorts and a hat. He was really friendly and smiling at all of the dancers. Most of the classes at BDC have a choreographed warm-up so the hardest part of a new class is the warm-up. So if you can make it thru the warm-up you’re in good shape. He didn’t seem to have a problem with the warm up; just the usual looking around to make sure he was doing the correct stretch on the correct foot etc. We went across the floor with leaps and again he was trying hard. I thought maybe he was a hip hop dancer who wasn’t used to leaping. On Friday it comes time for the combination and Fridays pace is the fastest because we usually have been working on the combo from

Tuesday and Thursday. After Tracie teaches the first 32 counts she asks if there are any questions or if anyone is lost. Well now the guy just starts laughing. It turns out he is a Motor Cross racer and his chiropractor told him he should get into dance because it will help with his balance, strength and flexibility. Apparently he thought he was taking a basic dance class. I was amazed that he hung in the class for that long. He tried everything and never once stopped and questioned himself or Tracie. It is amazing to me that he rides motor bikes and

flips a 200lb bike upside down and all over the course, but he thought dancing was hard.

This week I needed that kind of inspiration. I was getting down on myself because I felt like dancing was getting harder and part of me feels like when you ‘ve been doing it for so long it should get easier. But dance is hard and the constant challenge it provides is what makes me love it. Dance can never be conquered, it is a moving art form where perfection doesn’t exist. (even though sometimes I think it does). My quest to continue to grow is what keeps me dancing. Finding the time to go to class is what keeps me sane, it lets me focus on me, be inspired by others and share my passion. Who would have ever thought an hour and a half could be so important.

Body Awareness and Contemporary Movement Workshop

This workshop will focus on providing students with a basic knowledge of anatomy and how it relates to dance. Although designed with the contemporary dancer in mind, the information provided is easily translated to any genre of dance: From Ballet to Jazz, Contemporary to Bollywood. Classes will be lead by Broadway Dance Center faculty and co. directors of :pushing progress a company Calen J. Kurka and Chris Hale.

Also instructing will be Melissa Wolfe-Rosebro, certified Pilates instructor and long time student of anatomist and neuro-muscular therapist Irene Dowd. By making sophisticated information accessible to every student, we hope to provide essential tools for every dancer who has the will to learn and grow

Day one will center on body alignment and basic anatomy. Melissa Wolfe Rosebro will lead the class in a series exercises designed to align and strengthen the body. By discovering the importance of proper pelvic alignment and a re-organizing of the dancers body, each student will learn how to use their body in the most efficient and safest way for them individually. Through this work and her comprehensive knowledge of the body, her background in dance and Pilates, Melissa is able to speak to the dancers in a way that draws them in and facilitates greater understanding of their own instrument; helping everyone unlock the door to access their ability.

Day two will focus on warming up the body. Building on the concepts of day one and incorporating the GyrotonicR methodology and other systems of movement, we'll show the importance of preparing one's body for the work at hand. Class will be lead by Calen Kurka and Chris Hale and they will break down their own warm ups and discuss the importance of mindset while training.

Day three is the culmination of the workshop. By coupling the concepts and techniques explored in the first two sessions with movement, we will demonstrate how to incorporate all of the information into your daily dance life. It is the goal of all three instructors to empower their students through knowledge. We hope to send everyone away with the tools to leap to the next level as dancers hoping to experience longevity in their dance careers.

Waka Waka Dance!

Hello everyone!

We are looking for dancers to help promote the "1 Goal: Education for All" Campaign. Dancers will film a segment of the "Waka Waka" dance, which has been choreographed by Hi-Hat for the official music video of the song "Waka Waka: Time for Africa." The song has been selected by FIFA as the official anthem of the World Cup in Johannesburg this year.

We will be filmed Wednesday in Studio 1 from 8-9 a.m., so please come join us as we raise awareness for 1Goal! The dance is SUPER EASY, and it will be fun to do.

Jason Marquette's choreography earned two Platinum 1st place awards at Access Broadway in Valley Forge, PA for "Power's in the People" in the Senior Small Group Tap category and "Campus" in the Senior Tap Solo category. His musical theater piece, "Walking Papers" earned Extreme Platinum and he received the Choreography Award at Dance Xplosion in Hackensack, NJ.

Scholarship to Broadway Dance Center Awarded

Kasey McCarthy was awarded a scholarship to Broadway Dance Center at the Towson So You Think You Can Dance event in Towson, Md. November 12.

The Towson University Student Activities board organized an event that showcased students' dance talents and featured a celebrity guest judge, BDC choreographer Glenn Douglas Packard, who was on site to present the award.

Congratulations to all the dancers! Towson, we KNOW you can dance!

City Harvest Food Drive at BDC

Join BDC as we collect food for City Harvest!

Donations may be dropped off in the BDC lobby through November 30th.

Accepted foods are:

canned fruit
canned vegetables
peanut butter (plastic jars)
mac and cheese (packaged)
hot and cold cereal (packaged, family-sized)

The following donations will feed a family of four for a day:

Breakfast: Box of cereal or oatmeal; dried fruit; powdered milk; 100% fruit juice.
Lunch: Tuna, peanut butter, or soup; canned vegetables; canned fruit.
Dinner: Any canned protein (i.e. beef stew, chicken), or meat sauce; macaroni & cheese, pasta or rice; canned fruit or applesauce.
No glass, please, with the exception of baby food!
City Harvest collects food exclusively, though we can recommend programs which accept clothes and toys.

In less than a decade, Emmy award-winning choreographer and hoofer Jason Samuels Smith has emerged as a leader in the tap dance world. For the New York premiere of his new dance work, Charlie’s Angels, he considers the complex intersections between inspiration, re-interpretation, and creative process, using Charlie Parker’s revolutionary harmonic ideas and tonal vocabulary as a point of departure. Revisiting Parker’s early influential recordings, Samuels Smith relates them to the history of tap dance, as well as to his personal development as a choreographer.

Developed in collaboration with and performed by three of the most innovative women tap dancers in the world, Chloe Arnold, Michelle Dorrance, and Dormeshia Sumbry-Edwards, and also featuring Samuels Smith, the piece recontextualizes Parker’s music in the present moment. Samuels Smith takes us on a ride through fast tempos, virtuosic technique, and improvisation based on the harmonic structure that has become the legacy of bebop music.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer

Congratulations to everyone involved with the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk Sunday in Central Park! Our BDC team reached a new fund raising record with $3,425, helping the event's total of more than $1,644,580!

This year (our 4th walk!) we were joined by BDC students, teachers, staff members and dance enthusiasts as well as staff and interns from The PULSE on Tour®.

Thanks, again, for all your efforts to make this year the best walk yet. Your support was an integral part of the success of our team as we supported research, education, advocacy and service programs that will help fight breast cancer.

BDC Student will compete in Olympic Ice Dancing

BDC dancer Allison Reed, 15, and her partner Otar Japaridze have qualified to compete for Georgia in Olympic Ice Dancing!

Allison and Otar have only been skating together since May of 2009, so we can't wait to see how much they grow as a team as they prepare for the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.

Congratulations Allison and Otar!!! We'll be watching! :)

Atlas Media Corp, a leading producer of nonfiction television programming, is currently casting an exciting new documentary/reality series about up-and-coming dancers who train at Broadway Dance Center, as well as the instructors who teach them. Open casting calls will be held on Monday, August 31, from 1pm-8pm and on Tuesday, September 1, from 10AM-5PM.
Casting is at Broadway Dance Center (322 W. 45th St., 3rd floor)

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

We are seeking both students AND instructors of Broadway Dance Center.

We are NOT looking to cast people who take classes just for their personal fulfillment (no beginners). We are only casting people who aspire to dance professionally and can prove they have made dancing their number one priority! You must be actively seeking out a career in dance/performance. You must be trained, at the top of your game, and believe yourself to be New York City’s next breakout dancer!

We are NOT seeking dancers who perform in pairs or groups (ballroom dancers, for example). We are seeking solo dancers (ballet, hip-hop, etc). We don’t have a specific “type” of “look” we’re hoping to cast, so come as you are!

You must be 18 or older to audition; no exceptions!!

THE CASTING CALL

Monday, August 31st, from 1pm-8pm and on Tuesday, September 1st, from 10AM-5PM. You can arrive at any time within that time frame, but auditions will occur on a first-come, first-serve basis and at the producers’ discretion. Please bring a headshot, resume, and a completed application.

Please note that you will not be dancing for us at the time; no dance attire necessary.

There will be no overnight camping allowed inside or outside of Broadway Dance Center. Please do not arrive any earlier than the dates instructed.

When you arrive at the venue on one of the casting days, you MUST have two forms of ID that show proof of your age and a photograph (for example, a birth certificate and driver's license or a birth certificate and a passport or a birth certificate and a school ID card). If your birth certificate was not issued in the United States, you should bring proof of your citizenship and/or permanent U.S. residency. After showing proper ID, you will be given a registration number and an audition time slot. Numbers and times are handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis.

When your number is called, you’ll meet with our casting team for a brief interview. Again, you will NOT be dancing for us. Each audition may be different and are at the Producer’s discretion. The current plan is that those who make it through the casting call will be asked to return a few days later for on-camera interviews.

FAQ

Do I need to show up on both casting days?
No. You only need to show up on one casting day.

Can I pick up a number for someone else on casting day?
No. We’ll be taking down your name with each registration number, so numbers/time slots are not transferable.

Will everyone have the opportunity to audition on the audition day?
This will depend on how many people show up for the auditions. Although we would love to audition everyone who shows up, it may be impossible given time constraints built into our schedule. There is no guarantee that everyone will be given the opportunity to audition. If our time is running short, the Producer may walk around the venue to pick out people to audition (regardless of how early they came) based on performing ability, look, style, personality and other factors, at Producer’s sole discretion.

Are auditions by appointment or is it "cattle call" style?
Auditions for the first round are not by appointment. Again, numbers are handed out on a first-come, first-serve basis. You’ll receive a number and a time slot when you register.

If I have a manager for anything entertainment-related or a contract for my performing services, can I still audition?
If you advance to the next round(s) of the audition, you MUST be able to demonstrate to the Producer’s satisfaction that you are not bound by any arrangement, written or oral, that would conflict with the show in any way. Final decisions about this will be at the producer’s sole discretion.

On which television network will this air?
The network has not been announced yet and will not be announced during the audition process. The show will be produced by Atlas Media Corp (www.atlasmediacorp.com). Atlas creates award-winning productions that have become staple programming for U.S. networks such as A&E, National Geographic Channel, The History Channel, Discovery Channel, TLC, Food Network, WE: Women’s Entertainment, Travel Channel, The Disney Channel, and USA Networks. Remembering Ernest "Brownie" Brown

At BDC, we're taking the time to remember the wonderful talent and personality of Ernest "Brownie" Brown (April 25, 1916- August 21, 2009). Brownie was part of the tap dance duo Cook and Brown, along with Charles "Cookie" Cook. The two were celebrated entertainers and loved by their audiences.

Broadway Dance Center has classes for all ages, even the littlest movers and shakers!

*Yogi Beans Yoga* is a program created by Lauren Rosenfeld, a certified yoga and Pilates instructor. Through the physical movements, your child will be introduced to yoga's true meaning: union, expression and honor for oneself. In addition to the physical poses, we will explore the spirit of yoga where the significance of positive thinking and the maintenance of a healthy positive self-image are emphasized. Sprinkled with music, picture books and other age-appropriate props, children will be introduced to the world of yoga and inspired to awaken their inner yogini!

*Creative Movement* is a one-hour class in ballet and tap that introduces both movement and rhythm in a fun, nurturing environment. Basic ballet positions are taught as well as basic tap technique.

Classes are Tuesday or Thursday 9:30-10:30 am for children 3-4 years old

Summer Intern Showcase at Party at Club Arena

Broadway Dance Center's Summer Interns ended their session on a high note when they showcased pieces at Club Arena in Manhattan Sunday night. The audience enjoyed dances choreographed by the Interns and by BDC Faculty. In addition to the dance pieces, the Intern choir performed two selections from the Musical Spring Awakening as special guests Mishay Petronelli, Michelle Dorrance, Michela Marino-Lerman and Sean Jackson performed contemporary and tap pieces.

The showcase was a great way to say goodbye to all our Summer Interns-we are so proud of all of you!

Rosie’s Broadway Kids and Broadway Dance Center are pleased to announce our Summer 2009 Spotlight on Broadway Musical Theater Workshop. We invite you to join us at the new Maravel Arts Center just steps from Broadway’s Theater District, for a fun and educational 5 days!

Spotlight on Broadway will be held daily from 9am to 5pm. Your day will begin with master classes in theater dance from BDC’s renowned staff, followed by classes with RBKids acclaimed vocal coaches, tap instructors and acting coaches. The week will culminate in a showcase for friends and family. In addition, there will be visits from the Broadway community, a New York City casting director and members of the film and television communities.

Each child will receive an autographed Rosie’s Broadway Kids t-shirt, a daily afternoon snack and a cookout on our magnificent roof garden! Class sizes, most importantly, will remain small to ensure that each child will receive individual attention.

Maria Torres Named Artist-In-Residency

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Producing Artistic Director), announced the appointment of Maria Torres as Artist-in-Residence, naming the Latina director and choreographer to spearhead a new initiative in dance theatre, The Maria Torres Emerging Artist Project. The Project will showcase the talents of a new generation of young, professional dancers as they perform Torres's signature multiculturally-inspired choreography in newly developed Amas work.

"Maria has been in the Amas family for years, having choreographed 4 Guys Named Jose (2000) and directed and choreographed our hit Latin Heat (2003)", says Trinkoff. "A major part of the Amas mission is to support the emergence of new talent, and while Maria's career is in full bloom, it's time for the world to see her impact on the next generation of performers. These young dancers are phenomenal", she adds. "In the coming weeks and months we'll be presenting them in exciting new performance pieces in work that will be developed at Amas."

The Maria Torres Emerging Artist Project will train aspiring performers as young as eight, but the professional performing cadre will focus on those from 14 to 30 years of age. "I'm thrilled to have Amas Musical Theatre as my home for this groundbreaking project", says Torres. "We have such exciting plans for these young talents, and we'll be announcing some of these projects very shortly", she added.

Torres has starred on Broadway in the musical Swing! and as a choreographer is a veteran of stage and screen. Her work can be seen in the upcoming Tim Allen and Andie McDowell film The Six Wives of Henry LeFay and she has recently appeared as guest choreographer on the hit television show So You Think You Can Dance. She has trained Patrick Dempsey and Amy Adams for the film Enchanted and Raven Simone in College Road Trip. Torres also choreographed Jennifer Lopez and Marc Antony in El Cantante, a film in which she also appeared.

Amas Musical Theatre (Donna Trinkoff, Producing Artistic Director) is New York City's celebrated pioneer in diversity and multi-ethnic casting in the performing arts since 1968. Amas ("you love" in Latin) is devoted to the creation, development and professional production of new American musicals, the emergence of new artistic talent, and the training and encouragement of inner-city young people. In recent years, Amas has emerged as a leading not-for-profit laboratory for new musicals, and has produced a string of award-winning productions, many of which are receiving additional productions either at regional theatres or commercially. Shows recently emerging from Amas include Wanda's World, Shout! Check out BDC instructor Luam's clothing line on the June 27 episode of MTV's Made. The contestants performed with Sean Kingston and sported the purple hip-hop shirts that are part of the L.U.A.M. (Love Undteerstands All Music) line by Wildchild.
